PLANNING A NEW KITCHEN?
Before you start planning a new kitchen, the first thing you need to decide is whether you want to update your current kitchen or start totally afresh.
Look at what you already have, consider what you like and don’t like and what you want to remove, move or keep. If the kitchen layout works, only change it if you can see it will bring real benefit.
Bear in mind that if you’re planning on moving, totally updating your kitchen might not add value. Many buyers want to put their own stamp on a place and won’t want to change a new kitchen. In this case, making more superficial changes to refresh may be the best option.
Galley Kitchen
Galley kitchens are tailored towards having two work space areas and good storage area. This is often a favourite of many professional chefs. The kitchen doesn’t need to have a huge amount of space for this layout.

U Shape Kitchen
If you have a large room the U-Shape kitchen layout is perfect. It allows you to maximise space and gives you optimum levels of storage options. It’s important that all points of the working triangle aren’t too far from one another.
L-Shape Kitchen
The L-Shape kitchen is great when adding in a small dining table or a kitchen island. It can also prove very pragmatic as it employs the corner space, whilst also bringing the kitchen and dining room area together.
Island Kitchen
You can have a single line kitchen including an island. An island provides plenty of storage as well as extra work surfaces, but it requires at least 900mm of free space to work around.
In-Line Kitchen
An in-line kitchen is beneficial when there is a lack of space and can prove very practical. It’s a single line kitchen where the working triangle is fitted onto a straight line.
KITCHEN DESIGN IDEAS
If you want an entirely new kitchen, think about the layout and how you use your current kitchen. Ask yourself the following questions:
- What elements do you want close together, such as the fridge and cooking station, so you don’t have to make too many trips around the kitchen?
- Where will you want most worktop space? Next to the hob or oven?
- How much storage do you need? Think about whether you need more than you currently have and what you need to store.
- Do you use your kitchen for dinner parties or do you have kids to accommodate? Do you therefore need space for a table or for someone to sit to talk to you while you cook?
- Do you have lots of gadgets, and will you want these out, so you can use them quickly, or would you rather they were stored away?
- What appliances do you want and will there be room for them? For example, you may want an American fridge-freezer which takes up a lot of room; do you have the space?
Thinking about how you use your kitchen and how you would like to use your new one will help ensure your day-to-day needs aren’t overlooked in the planning stage.
